The film was first announced on July 4, 2008, but Eli Roth and RZA had been talking about the project since 2005. RZA had written the story, and the two collaborated on the screenplay. Roth came on board as producer in 2007, and brought the film to producers Eric Newman and Marc Abraham. Over the course of two years RZA and Roth worked on the screenplay together, talking through every aspect of the story, down to the detail of every weapon. Production began in China in the winter of 2010 and wrapped in early spring 2011. Russell Crowe was confirmed to have joined the cast on January 11, 2011.[1] Filming began in China by early 2011.[2][3][4][5] The first picture from the set was revealed in January. Russell Crowe will shoot his scenes through February.[2][6] The film’s budget is twenty million dollars. Eli Roth is one of the film’s producers.[7] Corey Yuen serves as choreographer. Filming occurred in the Hengdian World Studios. Scenes will also be shot in Shanghai.[4] Filming is now wrapped. The film stars Rick Yune, Russell Crowe, RZA, Pam Grier and Lucy Liu. The film is due out late 2012.[8]
